VA - The Brazilian Funk Experience: Patrick Forge Presents Rare Grooves from the EMI & Odeon Vaults 1968-1980

Compiled by UK DJ Patrick Forge, The Brazilian Funk Experience hooks into Patrick's personal love affair with the funky 70s Brazilian sound, digging deeper than deep into the respected EMI Odeon Label. Here he presents 20 solid gold Brazilian nuggets, most as rare as hen's teeth and on CD for the first time. Strangely every melody and jazz break sounds sooo familiar... might just be you've heard it on a radio show or at a club round London town. And it might just have been Patrick or one of his followers that was spinning tunes behind the decks at the time. So people, get on your Rio shoes and enjoy the grooves.

MESSAGE FROM THE TRIBE

Another one of my treasures discovered through the mighty, but now lost, Decoy Records of Deansgate, Manchester. In an age of HMV, Amazon and iTunes, I don't think it is possible to browse and stumble upon things as I once did anymore. The Blogging world helps, and there are some great music blogs out there, but nothing beats being in some funny record shop, the wanky aficionado types pretending they're knowledge means something on a bigger scale, puffing themselves up to the guy behind the counter. Browsing the albums, and something catching your eye, or as in this case ear, as it plays on the shop hi-fi.

spacey in parts, 1970's cop show music style in others, with turns of spiritual jazz, this is an almost flawless album, great for driving to, chilling at home with.. yeah man it is deep.. enjoy

Moodyman - Live on Giles Peterson's Worldwide - 11th Oct 2007

This post is via jinkzmusings.blogspot.com.......Thanks

Detroit house legend Kenneth Dixon Jr. (a.k.a. Moodymann), an outspoken voice in the world of electronic dance music, has made an exclusive appearance last week on Gilles Peterson's BBC Radio 1 show.

In his first-ever UK radio interview, Dixon talks about Detroit, music business, records, skating and more. Judging by the actual interview he seems like a very down-to-earth guy. Here's our favorite quotes:

"People pay too much attention to damn DJ, you know, but the talent is sitting on the turntables, you know."

"If you're looking for a hot DJ I'm probably the wrong person to call."

"There's only three things going to happen in Detroit. You're either going to sell or make cars, you're going to be a musician or you're going to be on drugs. There ain't too much in between that. You know, that's for a male. For female it would probably be prostitution."

Space Ranger - Star Wash EP

German trio Space Ranger blast off with a four tracker of wonderfully futuristic, yet classic sounding disco house. Out on Love Monk, the "Star Wash" EP comes in the form of three original productions with one remix by the Revenge.

Space Ranger are a Stuttgart based trio who are all individually very experienced. Amongst them, in careers spanning from the late eighties and early nineties they have remixed for the likes of Kool & The Gang, The Sugababes and Kurtis Blow. However, now the three embark on a collaborative project as Space Ranger, pulling together from the depths of their own experiences and the music they love - whether it be disco, soul, funk or house. The "Star Wash" EP signals the start of the Space Ranger era of their lives with a sonic boom.

"Herbal Cake" opens the release in a contented and danceable mood. A charmingly chugging disco house track, it yo-yos up and down throughout without ever really losing its momentum. A grungey bassline and hooky string chops add a classic feel, making it perfect for the dance hall. The Revenge turns in a devastatingly subtle remix of the same track next up. By simply pumping a 4/4 over the track, he turns it into a more modern day, driving house tune that still shimmers its disco influence at every opportunity. "Galactic Spice" is a slower, sleazy, boogie-funk styled grinder that plods along in its own spacey style before "Phase Fever" finishes things off with a slice of disco funk. Slowly building its way up, the final track unleashes all measures of funk, house and disco into one all mighty, ass shaking number.

An accomplished debut from a newly formed trio who bring their wealth of previous experience to their collective table. Space Ranger look back to the music of the past to help propel themselves into their vision of a funky future.

R.I.P .....See you on the other side...RESPECT

Just over a month since undergoing surgery following a heart attack, Gang Starr MC Guru (born Keith Elam) has died at age 48. According to a statement, Guru died of cancer-related causes on Monday after a long fight with the disease.

Guru's longtime collaborator and partner Solar mourns his loss in the statement and explains that Guru had written a letter to his fans that was to be released upon his death.

"The world has lost one of the best MCs and hip-hop icons of all-time — my loyal best friend, partner, and brother, Guru," Solar said. "Guru has been battling cancer for well over a year and has lost his battle! This is a matter that Guru wanted private until he could beat it, but tragically, this did not happen. The cancer took him. Now the world has lost a great man and a true genius."

Born on July 17, 1966, near Boston, Guru rose to fame in the late 1980s as part of the duo Gang Starr with partner DJ Premier. The pair helped define the New York underground rap sound in the 1990s. Their unique sound combined Premier's production palette, which leaned heavily on sampled jazz records and scratched vocals on the choruses, with Guru's uncompromising rhymes. Although the pair would work separately as often as they did together — Guru's Jazzmatazzseries of albums and Premier's work with Nas, Jay-Z, and underground act Group Home — Gang Starr continued to release critically acclaimed material throughout the late '90s and early 2000s.

Their 1998 album Moment of Truth was among their most critically lauded collections and Gang Starr's biggest-selling project to date. Gang Starr's last group project, The Ownerz, was released in 2003.

Guru found solo fame in 1993 when he released the first volume of hisJazzmatazz series, an all-star project that featured a number of collaborations with jazz icons such as Branford Marsalis, Donald Byrd, Roy Ayers and Ronny Jordan, as well as vocals from French producer Solaar and N'Dea Davenport of the Brand New Heavies. The album's mixture of jazz and rap was considered pioneering at the time, and the record spawned the hit "Trust Me." Guru would go on to make four volumes in the series.

Guru wrote his farewell letter while in the hospital, according to Solar. "I, Guru, am writing this letter to my fans, friends and loved ones around the world," it begins. "I have had a long battle with cancer and have succumbed to the disease. I have suffered with this illness for over a year. I have exhausted all medical options.

"I have a non-profit organization called Each One Counts dedicated to carrying on my charitable work on behalf of abused and disadvantaged children from around the world and also to educate and research a cure for this terrible disease that took my life. I write this with tears in my eyes, not of sorrow but of joy for what a wonderful life I have enjoyed and how many great people I have had the pleasure of meeting.

"My loyal best friend, partner and brother, Solar, has been at my side through it all and has been made my health proxy by myself on all matters relating to myself. He has been with me by my side on my many hospital stays, operations, doctors visits and stayed with me at my home and cared for me when I could not care for myself. Solar and his family is my family and I love them dearly and I expect my family, friends, and fans to respect that, regardless to anybody's feelings on the matter. It is my wish that counts. This being said I am survived by the love of my life, my sun KC, who I trust will be looked after by Solar and his family as their own. Any awards or tributes should be accepted, organized approved by Solar on behalf [of] myself and my son until he is of age to except on his own."

Guru very pointedly distanced himself from Premier in the letter, saying he didn't want his former musical collaborator to be able to participate in any tributes or events surrounding his death.

"I do not wish my ex-DJ to have anything to do with my name likeness, events, tributes etc. connected in anyway to my situation including any use of my name or circumstance for any reason and I have instructed my lawyers to enforce this," wrote Guru. "I had nothing to do with him in life for over 7 years and want nothing to do with him in death. Solar has my life story and is well informed on my family situation, as well as the real reason for separating from my ex-DJ.

"As the sole founder of Gang Starr, I am very proud of what Gang Starr has meant to the music world and fans. I equally am proud of myJazzmatazz series and as the father of Hip-Hop/Jazz. I am most proud of my leadership and pioneering efforts on Jazzmatazz 4 for reinvigorating the Hip-Hop/Jazz genre in a time when music quality has reached an all time low. Solar and I have toured in places that I have never been before with Gang Starr or Jazzmatazz and we gained a reputation for being the best on the planet at Hip-Hop/Jazz, as well as the biggest and most influential Hip-Hop/Jazz record with Jazzmatazz 4 of the decade to now.

"The work I have done with Solar represents a legacy far beyond its time. And we as a team were not afraid to push the envelope. To me this is what true artists do! As men of honor we stood tall in the face of small-mindedness, greed, and ignorance. As we fought for music and integrity at the cost of not earning millions and for this I will always be happy and proud, and would like to thank the million fans who have seen us perform over the years from all over the world. The work I have done with Solar represents a legacy far beyond its time and is my most creative and experimental to date. I hope that our music will receive the attention it deserves as it is some of the best work I have done and represents some of the best years of my life."

At press time, Guru's family — from whom he was reportedly estranged, along with other past associates — had not commented on his death, and last month his nephew Justin Nicholas-Elam Ruff posted several emotional videos on YouTube saying that Solar was preventing them from seeing the MC during his illness.

"Solar has completely cut us off. My family has no way of knowing what is going on with Guru's situation," he said in the video. "Solar has complete control over the flow of information given from the hospital and will not disclose any information to us. The doctors and the hospital staff will not discuss any info with Guru's family." Ruff said in one of the videos that no one in Guru's family had not seen him since February 28, and that he was prevented from seeing Guru when he visited the hospital last month.

whomadewho-the plot

Here it comes! The new album of WhoMadeWho: The Plot! Forget all the UK Top 10 bands form last year who tried to sound like the 3 Danish guys…here comes the original! And they are everywhere right now: The guys are on the cover of the most important music magazines all over Europe, playing the big festivals and getting props from all the important blogs.

Remember? The guys’ career started in 2006. Back then their first singles (Satisfaction.. and Flat Beat – the cover!) and their self-titled debut album was released on Gomma Records. They started to be the favorite band of a lot of big acts: LCD Soundsystem, Soulwax, Franz Ferdinand–yes even Daft Punk chose them as support act for their tours. And Josh Homme from Queens Of The Stone Age covered their single Space For Rent.

It is the perfect match: Gomma records and the three completely different musical characters of WhoMadeWho: Jeppe Kjellberg – the walrus bearded guitar player, has been part of the New Yorks experimental Rock and Jazz scene for years. He has even recorded a mini album with David Tronzo – guitar player of the legendary Lounge Lizards. Tomas Høffding – the bass man with the falsetto voice, has his roots in the Scandinavian Garage Rock scene (but always has been in love with fat disco bass lines). And Tomas Barfod aka Tomboy is not only the drummer of the band but he’s also known for producing some of the hottest Advanced Electro/ House music of the moment for labels such as Turbo, Kitsune and Get Physical.

Now, here’s the band’s new album. 13 songs that are the perfect example for a band who uses a tiny production budget to widen, expand and multi-colorize their sound without losing their soul. There’s a sexual and sensual authenticity to the breathed echoes of their first album. 13 songs which, when heard by Christian Wright – the legendary engineering-maestro at London’s Abbey Road studios – lead to the point that he at all costs wanted to master this record by himself.

The Danish guys created a brand new pop sound influenced by early 70ies Progrock as well as the complex side of disco music, with a very rough DIY pop approach and some well integrated electronic bits and drum sounds. Check the videos by Simon Owens (The Plot and TV Friend) and Chicks On Speed (This Train).

You might notice his edits touch on slow house and disco and classic soul, nothing in your face, to be honest I could put a song on repeat and have it going for 40 minutes+ and just keep trekkin’ along my work day completely enjoying doing anything while every once in a while dance in my chair." -I

TRUS'ME-IN THE RED

David Wolstencroft (AKA Trus'me) is set to follow up his debut album later this year.

The Prime Numbers boss has been steadily raising his profile over the past couple of years, racking up a flurry of his own sample-heavy releases as well as growing his label with tracks from Wireman, Actress and Reggie Dokes. Add to that a residency in NYC and his own Disco 3000 festival in Croatia, and it seems like Wolstencroft has been a very busy man.

Wolstencroft's obviously still had the time to work on new material, as his forthcoming In The Red album shows, though. Whereas his good friends from Manchester and Scotland helped him out with the live instrumentation on Working Night$, his sophomore effort sees David working with more established names. Piranhahead and Paul Randolph lend their vocals to one track each, LA-based boogie enthusiast Dam-Funk helps out on a low-slung version of Was (Not Was)' "Wheel Me Out," while Detroit multi-instrumentalist Amp Fiddler lends his skills to two tracks, including the album-opening cover of Bill Withers' "Can We Pretend." It may be less sample-based than his previous work, but In The Red should still appeal greatly to fans of Wolstencroft's organic house sound. by resident advisor
