MATTHEW HERBERT, ELECTRONIC INNOVATOR & SONIC EXPLORER, RETURNS WITH HIS BIG BAND ON THERE’S ME AND THERE’S YOU

Matthew Herbert’s dazzling new album, There’s Me and There’s You will be released October 28, 2008 on !K7. There’s Me and There’s You is the most seductive, sophisticated and subversive collection of protest songs ever recorded. Blending lush jazz instrumentation, soulful vocals, fascinating rhythms and a secret underground arsenal of outlandish samples, as well as featuring the cream of British jazz musicians, There’s Me and There’s You marks Herbert’s second collaboration with his big band and is a sequel of sorts to his 2001 project Goodbye Swingtime.

An electronic innovator, sonic explorer and prolific collaborator, Herbert has released a huge catalogue of critically acclaimed music under his own name as well as Doctor Rockit, Wishmountain, Radio Boy and others. He has also produced and remixed artists as diverse as Bjrk, REM, Quincy Jones, John Cale, Yoko Ono, Dizzee Racal and Roisin Murphy, as well as working with highly regarded original thinkers such as the chef Heston Blumenthal and playwright Caryl Churchill. However, There’s Me and There’s You marks a new chapter in his career as it is Herbert’s debut recording with revered and versatile London-based artist Eska whose vast array of past collaborators includes David Sylvian, Lewis Taylor, Anthony Tidd and Afrobeat legend Tony Allen.

Herbert’s albums always closely interweave medium with message, surface beauty with political subtext. Effortlessly wrapping deluxe avant-jazz arrangements around polemical lyrics and artfully selected noises, this album’s dominant theme is power and it’s abuses in the 21st century. Recurring motifs include the war in Iraq, the power of monarchy, religion, media, wealth inequalities, state-sponsored torture, the hypocrisy of climate change politics and the evils of rampant consumerism.

For example, the album contains a memorial to the victims of the Iraq war in “One Life,” which samples the incubator system which kept Herbert’s prematurely born son alive. Each beep represents 100 people killed in Iraq, from the start of the war in 2003 to October 2006. The disturbingly beautiful collage track “Nonsound” is made of ambient recordings from Palestine, including the sound of protestors being shot against the wall that divides the territories. He wanted to record both the favourite and most hated sounds of ordinary Palestinians, and this is what was sent back.

Additional samples include the sound of 70 condoms being scraped along the floor of the British Museum, a match being struck in the Houses of Parliament, one of a 100 nails being hammered into a coffin, vocals recorded at a Kent landfill site, a Kensington branch of McDonalds, a “stop and search” document issued under the Prevention of Terrorism act, 100 credit cards being cut up and 70 people blowing over water bottles, shaking US election badges and squirting bottles of Britney Spears’ “Curious” perfume in the grand entrance hall of the British Museum. This is an album, in many senses, of extraordinary renditions.

There’s Me and There’s You is full of playful melodies and deceptively joyous music paired with dark and angry themes. Throughout, Herbert’s message is deadly serious, but ultimately a hugely optimistic statement of people power. In the months ahead, Herbert plans to tour the album with an 18-piece orchestra, taking his Trojan Horse of sophisticated subversion directly to the people. This is democracy in action, a musical resistance movement, speaking truth to power in defiantly hopeful ways.

Gerry and Harvey together are responsible for the highly influential and collectible Black Cock records. The labels' releases are known as foundations for the resurgence of "left field," "warehouse" and "garage" type of music. Black Cock was like a voice in the wilderness when it started up in the early 1990s, as it was very unique and forward-thinking for its era. The dance music world of that time was at a crossroads. Disco dub & techno just starting to be heard out at the disco more, but the Black Cock records were edits reaching a bit deeper into "cosmic," "Balearic" & were just a little more fucked up sounding than the others. The records have had everything and anything appear in their mysterious grooves -- disco re-edits inspired by original tape edits from house music pioneers such as Larry Levan and Ron Hardy; strange sound effects and dialogue; to heavy, spacey drum breaks and samples.While gaining a reputation for being more "out there" than most, at the same time Black Cock was still fun and kept a more tongue in cheek attitude - from it's name, on down to the humorously titled tracks, credits, and logo mascot. However, it might be said that the label was so unique and advanced at one point that in fact, many distributors were unable to move copies and resorted to throwing hundreds of unsold records in the trash bin! Whoops! Fast forward ten or more years and now these elusive slices of sonic mayhem change hands between mania collectors and regularly fetch over hundreds of dollars easily on internet auction sites, as well as stylistically paving the way for a slew of imitators. These days it's not hard to browse thru a glut of modern "left field" "cosmic" "balearic" or "disco dub" re-edits at any well-stocked dance music store, a market that just wouldn't exist if Black Cock hadn't paved the way.

It's a match made in heaven. Two of the most innovative and influential producers of electronic music join forces for a very special project.
For the last few months Detroit legend Carl Craig and Berlin's dub-techno originator Moritz von Oswald have been busy recomposing three pieces from an original recording of the Berlin philharmonic orchestra from 1987, conducted by Herbert Von Karajan.
The quite simply breathtaking result will hit the shops on October 17th as the third part of the "Composed" series (Mathias Arfmann and Jimi Tenor were responsible for the first two parts) on Germany's renowned classical label "Deutsche Grammophon".
Having to chose from the immense back catalogue of Deutsche Grammophon, the pair finally decided to recompose one of the biggest classical hits around: Maurice Ravel's "Bolero".
But not just that, they also recomposed Ravel's "Rapsodie Espagnola" and Modest Mussorgsky's "Bilder einer Ausstellung".

Zero 7 is essentially Henry Binns and Sam Hardaker. The duo’s debut full-length, Simple Things, is a moody and engaging affair. Chock full of jazz, funk, hip-hop, and soul, the record bleeds together the past and the not-so-distant future into a squeaky clean, 70-plus minutes of unadulterated music.Most tracks are comprised of similar head-nodding drum beats, minor-ish jazz chords, intricate rhythm play, and a wealth of studio effects. These ingredients create a watery ambience over a tight rhythm section, juxtaposing the two elements in musical heaven. The album’s strength is derived from the consistent mood painted throughout. With its calculated song structures and seemingly forced ambience, the album has an incredibly lush and sensual mystique to it, but stays musically focused. Standout tracks are the title track, with its hip-hop beats, soft keyboards, and moody violins; and the incredibly moving "This World," reminiscent of Portishead’s trip-hop demeanor. Zero 7's ability to conjure beautiful lullabies with all the romance of 1960s French pop (as found on their debut LP, Simple Things) would have made them the toast of soundtrack composers and chill-out connoisseurs the world over.The album is shy from brilliant, though. Yes, the album is complex, engaging, and downright trippy, but it just doesn’t have enough originality and creativity to bring you to say, "this record is absolutely stunning."

Lifetracks is the debut solo album by respected British electronica artist Tom Middleton, released in the UK on October 1, 2007 and the US on November 6, 2007. The title is a reference to representing different places, times, and people in the artist's life. The majority of songs on the album have appeared on compilations over the last ten years, under the moniker AMBA, which was Middleton's previous ambient project. The song "Shinkansen" refers to the Japanese bullet train of the same name. The song "St. Ives Bay" refers to an area in the artist's home region of Cornwall, England. Tom Middleton is notable for building a worldwide reputation as one of the most eclectic DJs on the dance music scene. He started his career in the early 1990s as the partner of Richard D. James, better known as Aphex Twin, then branched out on his own to form the electronica duo Global Communication, among others with fellow musician.

Asha Puthli is one of the most successful vocalists ever to come out of India. Jazz fans exalt her as a legend for her daredevil vocals on the Science Fiction album by free jazz iconoclast ORNETTE COLEMAN. But with ten solo albums under her belt for labels like EMI, CBS/Sony, and RCA, Asha is a cosmpolitan pioneer of jazz-inspired funk, soul and electronic dance music.
Trained in Indian classical singing and jazz improvising, Asha Puthli created her own unique sound in the 1970s - soft, slinky, sexy, meditative, and chilled out. Captured on classic recordings like "Space Talk" and "Say Yes," that distinctively cool sound prefigured the entire rise of acid jazz, ambient dance and neo-soul music.
