A great look at an oft-neglected chapter of underground club -- the excellent electronic work coming out of Italy in the early 80s! The Italian approach to the music was certainly influenced by the sounds of New York, German, and England at the time -- but it also had its own flavor -- a kind of unabashed love of the dancefloor, and a subtle hope that disco would someday come again! The grooves on the set are all spare and electronic, but also quite infectious -- with a really strong focus on the hook, and a stripped-down sound that somehow makes them even more compelling. Titles include "Robot Is Systematic" by Letric Workers, "Dance Boy Dance" by Alexander Robotnick, "Stranger In A Strange Land (club)" by NOIA, "Collision (rmx)" by Sphinx, "Pinguins Invasion (hot version)" by Scotch, "Plastic Doll (rmx inst)" by Dharma, "Walking In The Neon (club)" by Peter Richard, "Wonderful (inst)" by Klein & MBO, "I Need Love (inst)" by Capricorn, and "Spacer Woman (voc)" by Charlie.

Dr. Lonnie Smith (born July 3, 1942 in Lackawanna, New York) is a jazz musician, recognized as a player of both the Hammond B3 organ and piano. Many consider him the world's top jazz organist. He was born in Lackawanna, New York, (just outside of Buffalo), into a family with a vocal group and radio program. Smith says that his mother was a major influence on him musically, as she introduced him to gospel, classical, and jazz music. He was part of several vocal ensembles in the 1950s, including the Teen Kings. Art Kubera, the owner of a local music store, gave Smith his first organ, a Hammond B3. His affinity for R&B melded with his own personal style, and he quickly became a local legend. He moved to New York City, where he met George Benson, the guitarist for Jack McDuff's band. Benson and Smith connected on a personal level, and the two formed the George Benson Quartet featuring Lonnie Smith, in 1966. After two albums under Benson's leadership, (It's Uptown and Cookbook), Smith recorded his first solo album (Finger Lickin' Good) in 1967, with George Benson on guitar, Ronnie Cuber on baritone sax, Melvin Sparks on guitar and Marion Booker on drums. This combination remained stable for the next five years. After recording several albums with Benson, Smith became a solo recording artist and developed a career that has produced over 30 albums under his own name. Several legendary jazz artists have joined Smith on his albums, including Lee Morgan, David "Fat Head" Newman, King Curtis, Blue Mitchell, and Joe Lovano among others. In 1967, Smith met Lou Donaldson, who put him in contact with Blue Note Records. Donaldson asked the quartet to record an album for Blue Note, Alligator Boogaloo. Blue Note was so impressed by the album that they signed Smith for the next four albums, all of which are now considered classics of soul jazz. This highly influential period produced Think (with Melvin Sparks, Marion Booker, Lee Morgan and David Newman) and Turning Point (with Lee Morgan, Bennie Maupin, Melvin Sparks and Idris Muhammad). The latter is largely regarded as his most seminal studio album. Smith's next album Move Your Hand was recorded at the Club Harlem in Atlantic City, New Jersey in August of 1969. This surprise hit spread allowed his reputation to grow beyond the Northeast. He would record another studio album Drives and one more live album Live at Club Mozambique before leaving Blue Note. Live at Club Mozambique was recorded in Detroit on 21 May 1970, and is considered to be his finest live recording. Smith toured the northeastern United States heavily during the 1970s. He concentrated largely on smaller neighborhood venues during this period. His sidemen included Ronnie Cuber, Dave Hubbard, Bill Easley and George Adams on sax, Donald Hahn on trumpet, George Benson and Larry McGee on guitars, and Joe Dukes, Sylvester Goshay, Phillip Terrell, Marion Booker, Jimmy Lovelace, Charles Crosby, Art Gore, Norman Connors and Bobby Durham on drums. Smith has performed at several prominent jazz festivals with artists including Grover Washington, Jr., Ron Carter, Dizzy Gillespie, and Lou Donaldson. He has also played with musicians outside of jazz, such as Dionne Warwick, Gladys Knight, Etta James, Joan Cartwright, and Esther Phillips. Dr. Smith continues to tour and produce albums (his latest work is Jungle Soul.) When asked why he calls himself 'Doctor', he calmly states that it is for the same reason why he now wears a turban to all of his shows: "No particular reason." He has been named the "Organ Keyboardist of the Year" in 2003, 2004 and 2005 by the Jazz Journalist Association.

TRICKSKI: trickski trickski is a collaboration of the two producers and djs yannick labbé and daniel "stoerte" becker as well as mc jack migger a.k.a. fna, who joins them for special events. they first joined forces about in 2004, even though all members had known each other long before. all of them are from freiburg, the wonderfully warm black forest region of Germany. it was there where they got infected with club music at rainer trüby’s monthly "root down" joint. when they found themselves together again after one by one moving to berlin it was time to start trickski. yannick had just released his first 12" hotbox/gallieni on daniel paul’s cabinet label while fna and daniel had figured out that they would rather be on the artist side than on the club side of the night life business. Having been educated by rainer trüby’s famous jazz and disco knowledge, yannick and daniel quickly moved forward towards rougher house and techno sounds. one can hear this evolution in trickski’s first releases. while "hormony" kicked off the black label series on compost records as a dirty consense track for the nujazz and the cosmic crowd, "sweat" released on sonar kollektiv, was already heading more into the house and techno field. the greatest surprise and compliment trickski could receive came from detroit. carl craig, their long time idol, selected "sweat" for his fabric 25 compilation and turned it into a small underground hit.
a few remixes later, jazzanova - impressed by the fresh and unique sound of trickski - decided to give them the responsibility for a new club series on their label Sonar Kollektiv. This honor was first given to Dixon who started his own series entitled "innervisions" before and recently got independant with it. However, now it was trickski’s turn, and thus, "member of the trick" was born. yannick and daniel as a&rs and designers of this sub-label signed artists like the somewhat rare and strange leroy and darnell from detroit, the "skwerl" with his house anthem "all woman" featuring hubert tubbs as a vocalist. another mott release is by the hot pic of 2007 "future beat investigators" from finland. trickski of course, releases their own music on MOTT as well. "at les," a cover version of carl craigs classic techno tune, was their first big seller, followed by "powerhorse" which was more experimental (on mott07) and the deep house stabber "lost tape/lost dub" which featured the split ep "meerkats" as well as the much hyped artist "solomun" from hamburg. after releasing their label compilation "members of the trick" with special edits of all the hits and exclusive tracks a remix 12" rounds up the series. trickski’s treatment for solomun’s "black rose" is getting lots of airtime by big names like, Ame, Jazzanova, Roland Appel or Willie Graff. to just name a few.
right now trickski is working on their album and a few club 12"s for different labels.
trickskis dj sets are always fun! they see the house / techno field in a broad context and move in a triangle between deep and jacking NY house to techno and more moody disco and cosmic tunes. one can experience that at their moonthly residency at cookies (every third tuesday a month). if you are only interested in a straight night of minimal techno you are definitely wrong booking trickski. but you can exspect surprises, great music and sweat all over the place!
trickski djs at clubs like, cookies, weekend or tape (berlin) fabric, the end and bar54 (london) club 11 (amsterdam), dornroosje (nijmwegen) culture box (copenhagen), rollerboys (stockholm), zukunft (zurich), goa (madrid), batofar and nouveau casino (paris), trintaeum (porto), brancaleone (rome), sottomarino giallo (milan), dada (tel aviv) übel & gefährlich (hamburg), registratur (münchen) or root down (freiburg)
trickski has also been the official representative for germany at "gerMany Faces" in australia for the goethe institut.
Heres a couple of mixes by Trickski to get you in the groove:
During the summer of 1973, director Omiros Efstratiadis was making a crime film called "She Knew No Other Way". The film takes place in the cosmopolitan Greek island of Rhodes where a bunch of hippies spend their holidays seeking an easy and carefree way of life using legal and illegal means in order to get it. The director needed a film score to match with the psychedelic scenes of the film which where overshadowed by a psychotic mixture of sex and violence. Mike Rozakis was the ideal composer for this film score. Carrying an excellent background in beat music, he managed to filter his influences through the fusion trends of jazz and his classical learning.
There is a wealth of styles throughout the film score. Funky breaks, jazzy grooves, fusion improvising and psychedelic effects. The innovative arrangements are enriched by the skilful performance of the musicians creating a unique avant-garde score.
Here is a video for "La Discotheque" (using scenes from the film) in high quality MPEG format.
With his debut album, The Man In The Shadow, released in 1997, Dominique Dalcan aka Snooze instantly proved himself as a highly regarded singer-songwriter on the French music scene. Audiences worldwide also acknowledged his talent and Snooze’s first album became (and to this day still is) one of the main successes of Belgian record label SSR/Crammed. It was released in 25 countries and several tracks from the album were licensed to some twenty compilations worldwide. The same year he wrote the soundtrack to Alain Berliner’s film “Ma vie en rose”, a motion picture receiving a Golden Globe for best foreign movie. Snooze’s second album Goingmobile is a warmer, more orchestrated production using many different sound architectures and multiple layers blended together over Latin percussion, featuring three distinguished vocalists: Franco-Israeli Nancy Danino, American Nicole Graham and jazz legend Deborah Brown The success of his albums led to collaborations with well known remixers Senor Coconut, Isolée and Freaks. The single ‘Did I give you much’ and its animated 3D video clip, produced by Partizan, also aired heavily on MTV. Moreover, Snooze’s music was used for advertising campaigns as well as feature films such as ‘The Truth about Charlie’, directed by Jonathan Demme. In 2002, Snooze trod the summer festival circuit playing at numerous parties such as Paleo in Switzerland, the Dour festival in Belgium and live gigs in France, Spain, Portugal and Canada. On this new recording, the centre of attention is Snooze’s compelling voice and his lyrics dealing with everyday life and people in search of emotional rescue. This new collection of songs, drenched in humanity, ventures into modern folk and elegantly blends itself with country music, lingering jazz and synthesized sounds.
Not much to say about this classic tune. seems to be in everyone's playlist.
''It was one of those nights, one of those nights when you feel the world stop turnin',you were standing There, there was music in the air.I should have been Away, but I knew I'd have to stay.''
"The Godfather of Disco (G.O.D.)" - a documentary about Mel Cheren by Gene Graham
Based on Mel Cheren's powerful autobiography "My Life and the Paradise Garage: Keep On Dancin", "The Godfather of Disco (G.O.D.)" is a feature length documentar by director Gene Graham that will give you an overview of the rise and fall of the 70's era dance music. Through a series of interviews with a who's who of the dance music community, G.O.D. uses the arc of Mel's life to examine the early 70's musical and cultural currents that gave birth to disco, West End Records' contribution to that scene, the rise of Paradise Garage, and the onslaught of HIV/Aids and it's impact on New York City. The documentary look at Mel's activist years as he harnesses the power of music to fight Aids via his charity work for GMHC and 24hrs for Life/LifeBEAT. Through it all, Mel has been there, done that, lived to tell the tale and continues to do it all today.
Mel Cheren - he's the guy that put an instrumental mix on the b-side of a 45rpm record. Mel Cheren - he's the guy who put out the frist 12" DJ record.

Wilson das Neves (Born June 14, 1936, Rio de Janeiro) is a Brazilian musician known notably for his percussion playing. He is a key figure in the history of Brazilian music having played with many of Brazil's greatest musicians across many decades and featured on numerous important recordings.
It all started back in 1989. Jörg “Wicked E.” Rosenbaum and Thilo “der kraft” Kraft were teaming up in Frankfurt/Germany as the DJ-duo Marschmellows. They were DJs of the first hour in Germany and one of the leading influences on the newly forming European TripHop/Dub/NuJazz-Scene. In 1995 the duo also got into the production of music - the rest is history. They released three successful albums on the infamous InfraCom-label (“Klangsystem”/“rebound”/”:swat”) a highly appreciated double-DJ-mix album on Audiopharm (“From the decks of Marschmellows”) and a Remix-Collection on Caramelle/ZYX (“Mixes and remixes 1996 – 2003”) as well as almost 15 twelve inches and contributed to more than 100 compilations. The name Marschmellows as well as the two DJs themselves went around the globe. There are only a few countries left where the two guys haven’t played yet, but you can be sure, that it is only a matter of time, when this is going to happen…
In the beginning of 2004 Thilo and Jörg realized that their musical taste is going in different directions: Thilo found his love for Minimal House while Jörg prefers to play Breakbeats these days. They both made the decision to DJ separately, just to represent their own favorite styles - while still going along under the name Marschmellows, each of them pushing his own musical ideas to the limit separately. Jörg “DJ Wicked E.” Rosenbaum was digging Breakbeats from the very beginning of the Marschmellows’ DJ-career and found his main influence in Dub, HipHop and TripHop in the beginning of the 90s. With the first wave of UK Big Beat he could find himself getting lost in Beats and became a lover of this particular style of Rockin’ Dancefloor Music. These days he evolved into a specialist on all Beats and Breaks based Club-Music, no matter if you’re talking Downbeat, Funky Breakbeats, Nuskool Breaks or any other form of Hip Hop-based styles in between.
Rosenbaum started doing his first solo-remix away from Marschmellows in 2002 with a remix “Basstard” of Kopenhagen based beatfreak Ben Horn. You can find this remix on the Marschmellows DJ-Mix/album as well as on their remix collection. He continued his studio-work with his old friend and Marschmellows-producer Roland Hackl (Aromabar/Telemark/Vienna Scientists) at I/O studios Vienna. Besides his own productions under the moniker DJ Wicked E. they just finished the smashing remix for MTHeads’ “Yayaya, let me show them…”. It is released as a Promo-12” on the Hearse Company/UK and DJs and the club-crowds are digging it…
Own material consists of the rolling breaks-and-bass-styler “Kathmandu”, which is going around as a dubplate in the cases of the most important Breaks-DJs worldwide as well as still secret tracks and remixes that are getting traded on CD amongst insiders. New musical productions will also include collaborations with UK rappers MC Sirreal (Dub Pistols/Freestylers) and Bad Manners. MC Sirreal and DJ Wicked E. teamed up five years ago and MC Sirreal finally turned out to be the MC for Marschmellows on many big international shows. DJ Wicked E. and MC Sirreal take the MC/DJ-game to the maximum these days, as their experience in playing out together made them one of the best teams in Breakbeat. You shouldn’t miss them, if you have a chance to see them live…
No wonder, that they both have the desire to see their styles being represented on an album. In January 2005 the Funk Supreme-compilation was released. It is a double-DJ-mix-CD of finest, funky and uptempo Breakbeats, compiled and mixed by DJ Wicked E. with raps and lyrics of MC Sirreal. It is a unique piece of art and will turn many heads, as the form is new and represents a clubnight with DJ Wicked E. and MC Sirreal to the fullest.
In addition to this DJ Wicked E. and MC Sirreal play international gigs to promote the CD and bring their incredible styles to the clubs. DJ Wicked E. is also booked to play the Pink Panthers Penthouse Party Tour in Germany in cooperation with MGM and Virgin to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the legendary comic character Pink Panther. Tons of further solo-gigs national and international are already scheduled. Besides all the DJ- and production-work DJ Wicked E. is running his own label and DJ-booking-agency called Gene Poole together with his partner Christian Floeck.
2006 saw Rosenbaum reactivating the name Marschmellows and also starting his very own label Gene Poole Music. Connected to the Gene Poole Agency, Gene Poole Music delivers state-of-the-art breakbeat/electro from fresh german talents and producers all over the world. Gene Poole Music has released already the Marschmellows 12” “It ain`t right” (feat. MC Sirreal) and Boogie Army`s 12” “Das Tier”. More to follow.
You better keep your eyes and ears open for one of the busiest man in music-business, he will for sure rock a club next to you soon.
Les Gammas was founded by Marc Frank, DJ, drummer and singer and pianist Jochen Helfert. Jochen has been playing rhodes in a brasil-jazz combo - together with the Gammas' live bassist Pe Spier - where he has developed his own ideas of harmonics and sound. In '99 Les Gammas have played live as well in clubs and at festivals, e.g. "Fez Jazz Festival" in Bari, Italy, the "Wiesen Festival" in Austria and "Jazz 2010" in Aarhus, Denmark.
LES GAMMAS finally were splitting and focusing on different projectes now.
Timmy Thomas (born 13 November 1944, Evansville, Indiana) is an American R&B singer, keyboardist, songwriter, and record producer, best known for the hit song, "Why Can't We Live Together". Thomas first attracted interest for his work as an accompanist with Donald Byrd and Cannonball Adderley, before working as a session musician in Memphis, Tennessee, and releasing singles on the Goldwax Records label. He had little solo success until he moved to Glades Records in Miami, Florida, and in late 1972 he released. This was a memorable and heartfelt message song distinguished by its soulful organ, stripped-down production with a simple drum machine, and impassioned vocals.[citation needed] The record topped the Billboard R&B chart, made the top three in the Billboard Hot 100, and Top Ten in many other countries including the UK. The follow-up "People Are Changin'" made the charts the next year, and he continued to issue singles. The perception of him as a one-hit wonder is belied by his continued success in the R&B chart, where he had several further hits through to 1984. He also continued to work on sessions for TK Records artists, including Gwen McCrae, and in later years as a producer. Thomas appeared on Joss Stone's The Soul Sessions album.
The Jones Girls consisted of sisters Brenda, Valorie and Shirley Jones. They served as backup singers for Lou Rawls, Teddy Pendergrass, Aretha Franklin, and Le Pamplemousse. They worked with Diana Ross from 1975-78 and were the backup singers on Linda Clifford's 1978 album If My Friends Could See Me Now. Their biggest hit was "You Gonna Make Me Love Somebody Else". The song broke the Billboard Magazine Top 40 at #38 in May 1979. The song was also a Top 5 R&B hit. An additional hit followed in 1980, with the single "I Just Love The Man", charting at #9 in January 1981. The less successful, "Nights Over Egypt", (released in 1981, charting at R&B #23 in 1982) is currently a cult classic that receives more airplay on urban radio stations than their previous bigger hits. After the release and failure of their fourth U.S. album, On Target, lead singer Shirley Jones pursued a solo career and had a #1 R&B hit on Billboard with "Do You Get Enough Love", from her top ten debut album Always In The Mood. "Who Can I Run To", from the band's self-titled 1979 debut album, was covered by Xscape in 1995. Their cover version became a number #1 R&B and #8 Pop hit. Valorie Jones died on December 2, 2001 in Detroit at the age of 45.
